I am a HUGE fan of vintage clothes. I know it’s very in right now to like these things, but I’ve liked them a long time. I was the eleven year old girl who went to take your daughter to work day wearing a red snood in my hair and my most stylish vest. I spent my tenth birthday at home watching Casablanca. My idols growing up were Katharine Hepburn, Myrna Loy, and pretty much any little doll with a starring role in a movie musical. I know that scarves are the it accessory at the moment, but I’ve been wearing scarves of all types since I was a tween. I used to spend nights dreaming of wearing a silk gown with a slit up to my hip, my hair in long finger waves, crooning on top of a baby grand piano in a smoky martini bar somewhere. I love hats. I’ve been known to buy hats and fascinators I love in the hope that I might some day have an occasion to wear them to. As I grew up I started to love pinup art, burlesque, and strippers. Strip clubs today just don’t seem to have the level of class that they used to, do they? Even so, I used to be a regular at strip clubs, hoping to spot a mesmerizing talent.
I got off on a bit of a tangent there. The point is, my favorite online store for my vintage style clothes in my size (that part is important…with boobs like these, I can’t shop just anywhere) is Unique Vintage. I’ve purchased plenty of things there, but I’m always hesitant to spend more than a certain amount on clothing items, since my weight has been known to yo-yo a bit over the years. Vintage style clothes always look better on me than the modern styles, as I have a strange body type. To tell the truth, I’m most comfortable in a corset or a good girdle underneath most anything. So when Hubby and I decided to sign Baby Girl up for baby swim classes this winter, I realized I was going to need a bathing suit. I actually like to swim, but I’ve never had good luck with bathing suits. In most department stores I have to shop in the plus size section, which are always super ugly and made in prints that remind me of old ladies doing water aerobics. Also, bathing suits are expensive, and if I’m going to spend real money on them, I want to get something I feel good in. On top of that, I can’t wear bikinis. I never used to wear them anyway, due to my odd body shape, but since I had Baby Girl I also have some loose belly skin (not a lot, I’m not a freak) and stretchmarks to reckon with. Hence I decided to try my luck at Unique Vintage. I bought a classy, vintage style black one piece and a super cute floral swim cap (chlorine wreaks complete havoc on my super long hair). As I was preparing to check out, I noticed their “Catch of the Day” program. You add a generic clothing item, shoe item, or accessory item to your cart for $25, $15, or $5 each, respectively, and they ship you a surprise item. Now, I was skeptical about this. I know that many shops would have sent me something from the back room that would never sell just to get rid of it, and I wouldn’t be getting my money’s worth, but I was curious, and based on their normal pricing, I felt that it had the potential to be a hell of a deal. I figured I could try it once, and if I wasn’t satisfied, I just wouldn’t do it again.
Well, I got my items yesterday, and I was so pleased! On top of the items I chose and purchased on my own, which I was extremely satisfied with, I also got some fabulous stuff as a result of the Catch of the Day! Here’s what I got, I think I did well!
Item 1: When Prairie Met Sally Black & White Swing Dress with Bows
Retail Price: Normally $78.00, Currently on Sale for $45.00
What I Paid: $25.00 Catch of the Day
Total Savings: $20.00 or 44%
How super cute is this? I guessed at my sizing, as I had no idea what brand the item would end up being and chose a 2XL, which fits me like a glove (I know that sounds like I’m a total whale, but I’m 5’4″, 150 lbs., with a 38G chest…give me a break). I love that it has removable straps, as my broad shoulders look a little odd bare. I plan to wear it this Friday to a holiday party.
Item 2: Houndstooth and Black Heels
Retail Price: Unknown. This item is no longer available on the site, so I couldn’t find a price, but they don’t have any pair of shoes for sale with a full price under $30.00, so that’s what I’m using.
What I Paid: $15.00 Catch of the Day
Total Savings: My guess is approximately $15.00 or 50%
I absolutely adore these shoes. I have somewhat wide feet and always hesitate to buy shoes online, as I’ve had bad luck in the past squeezing my feet into ridiculously narrow shoes, but I was able to get these on no problem, and they are comfortable and very professional looking. They would look great with a vintage dress, or even a sleek suit.
Item 3: Long Pearl White Necklace (I’m guessing this is the one, and not this one, since it’s cheaper, but I actually have no idea, since there are no lengths listed on the site, and no branding on the necklace itself.)
Retail Price: $12.00 (if I’m right about which necklace I received)
What I Paid: $5.00 Catch of the Day
Total Savings: $7.00 or 58%
I’ve actually been meaning to buy a long string of faux pearls, as I keep coming across instances in which I wish I had one. Now I do!
So in summary, I saved about 50% on these items, which I love, and all I had to do was put my faith in the staff at Unique Vintage. I know it was worth it for me, and I will probably try the Catch of the Day the next time I plan to place an order from them (maybe when I buy a crinoline to go under my new swing dress?). Here’s hoping I get just as lucky next time!
