Citrus Lane Review: December 2013

It’s that time of the month again! Time to review another Citrus Lane box and see if it was worth it’s purchase price! See my reviews for previous months here.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with how Citrus Lane works, it is a subscription service that sends you age appropriate items for your child aged 0-5 years every month. The cost of the subscription depends on how long you are willing to commit to. For month to month or three month subscriptions, your cost is $25.00 per month, while it goes down to $21.00 per month if you sign up for a six month or one year subscription. To personalize the box, you choose the child’s age and gender (or neutral) and receive items appropriate to those selections.

In my reviews, I can only review what my daughter receives in her box. I will always tell you what my age and gender selections were, give you a description of the items, what I think of them, pricing, etc.

This month my daughter received a seventeen month old box with a neutral gender selection.

1. Handprint Art Kit from Pearhead
Price: $14.99
Status: Interesting
Comments: I don’t actually have a picture or a link to this, as I couldn’t find it for sale anywhere, but it’s a white canvas on a stretcher frame that comes with pink and blue paint, and you’re supposed to put your child’s handprints on it. I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with it yet, since I already have Lilly’s baby handprint on the wall of her room, but it’s a pretty sizable canvas, so I’m thinking that when she’s 18 months old in February I’ll do a “family” of handprints, including mine and Hubby’s. A cool thing, especially if I hadn’t already been subscribing to the service for a year…since the first handprint kit came in my first Citrus Lane box. 🙂

2. Rainbow Stacker from Melissa & Doug
Price: $7.99
Status: Awesome!
Comments: I’m always surprised when I look up prices at how inexpensive Melissa & Doug items are. They’re well-designed, sturdy, made of solid wood…I always think they should be more expensive than they are. Baby Girl was already in love with her Green Toys Stacker, which I actually like better than this one, but she’s a fan of this one too, and we’re only a day into it!

3. I Took the Moon for a Walk from Barefoot Books
Price: $7.99
Status: Great
Comments: You can never have too many children’s books. I really believe that. This one is sweet, and quite well illustrated, so a great addition to our collection. It’s short, with few words on the page, making it very age appropriate. My only complaint is that it is a paperback, so it has to go out of reach for now.

4. Snuggly Lotion from Episencial
Price: $7.34
Status: Meh
Comments: Always with the lotion! I have so much organic, sensitive skin lotion…quit with the skincare products already! This is the travel size of the snuggly lotion, which comes in their travel pack, hence the strange price point.

Final Thoughts:
After usually getting 5-6 items, this box with only 4 was a bit of a letdown. On top of that, there was no big ticket WOW item, and after a stellar year-end holiday box last year, this one was a bit of a disappointment.

By the Numbers:
Total value of the box items: $38.31
Total value of items I will use: $38.31
Is the value greater than the cost? YES
While the value was pretty good, I’ve had better boxes, and there was nothing in here that I was over the moon about, unfortunately. Still, it was fun to get, and Baby Girl gets more excited about every box.

Citrus Lane Review: September 2013

It’s that time of the month again! Time to review another Citrus Lane box and see if it was worth it’s purchase price! See my reviews for previous months here.

This month my daughter received a fourteen month old box with a neutral gender selection.

1.Charley Harper 123s from AMMO Books
Price: $9.95
Status: Useful
Comments: Always happy to see a book in these boxes! This one is quite good for a counting book, and the illustrations are quite lovely. My only real issue with it is that we have about 10 billion counting books already (a clear exaggeration, but you get it). Seems well made, and I’m sure Baby Girl will love it.

2. Push & Pull Elephant from Hape Toys
Price: $9.99
Status: Useful
Comments: Our toy collection is getting quite large thanks to Citrus Lane (also Bluum), and this isn’t so awesome a toy that I didn’t roll my eyes a little, but it is sturdy, well made, and Baby Girl didn’t already have a pull toy (surprisingly enough), so I’m sure once she gets around to walking she will put it to good use. I think it is very classic looking, and not as gaudy as a lot of modern toys, so I rather like it. Bravo!

3. Playful Wash from Episencial
Price: $3.83
Status: Meh.
Comments: This item’s presence in my box annoys me a bit to be honest. Episencial is a regularly featured brand in the Citrus Lane box, and I actually love their products. But month after month we receive sample sizes that are worth very little, and month after month I complain about it both here and on the survey that Citrus Lane sends us every month. I find this interesting, since I recently started subscribing to Bluum, which says they send sample sizes, and I received full size everything from them (I did receive a single luna bar, which is technically a sample), while Citrus Lane advertises themselves as sending full size products, and I get sample sizes. Boo. Also, how much baby shampoo and body wash do they think I go through? Every few months I get another bottle of this stuff, plus the add to box option to buy even more of it. I’m not bathing my kid every few hours, I only need so much soap.

4. Super Toddler Bar from Happy Family
Price: $0.84
Status: Meh
Comments: I actually wanted to be excited about this item. Now that Baby Girl is learning to feed herself, we are always looking out for good, portable snacks that she likes and can eat, so I like to get to try things through these boxes. My problem with it is actually twofold. First of all, as I often complain about, there was only one in the box. If she likes it, that one bar is my only chance at it, especially since my local grocery store doesn’t carry this brand (although, they did include some coupons for this brand in the box, if your local store does carry it). Normally I would get that it is a price thing…but one bar costs less than a dollar! A whole box is only $4.20! I just feel gipped on this one. If that weren’t bad enough, of all the flavors to get, we got the one with chocolate in it. We prefer not to give Baby Girl much chocolate. They couldn’t have sent us an apple one? Bah.

5. Nail Color from Julep
Price: $14.00
Status: Meh
Comments: Holy crap! Fourteen dollars for nail polish? I’m always blown away by the crazy overpriced “for mom” items that show up in my Citrus Lane box. I can see why some moms would have been excited to get this in their box, but I prefer to keep my nails on the natural side, with just strengthening serum and topcoat to keep them looking nice (but I am really lucky and have pretty great looking natural nails). This might make a good gift for someone this Christmas, but I won’t be using it.

Final Thoughts:
I’m actually starting to feel a little let down by my Citrus Lane boxes. Now that I’ve received a Bluum box, I feel like I may prefer them to Citrus Lane. They allow me to subscribe for multiple kids under one account, I earn credits toward free boxes more easily, and the one box I’ve received so far had a pretty high value. This box was very unimpressive, and I’m a little sad about it.

Optional Add-to-Box:
The optional add-to-box this month was a large selection of Aden + Anais items at 10% off. Why didn’t I take advantage of this? Two reasons. The first is that you can get many of the same items for 10% off or more on amazon. Secondly, most of the products were for newborns or small infants, and now that I have a toddler, we wouldn’t get much use out of them. I hear it’s a fantastic brand though, and hope it was a good offer for someone!

By the Numbers:
Total value of the box items: $38.61
Total value of items I will use: $24.61
Is the value greater than the cost? MAYBE –
They really walked the line with this box! The total value is more than the cost, but my useful value is less than a month to month subscription, and had I subtracted the playful wash (which I considered doing), it would have bene less than even a one year subscription would cost per box. This is the first time I have had questionable value ratings. Why is Citrus Lane going down hill?

This month my daughter received a thirteen month old box with a neutral gender selection.

1.Octopus Opposites from Barefoot Books
Price: $6.39
Status: Useful
Comments: Barefoot Books is one of those brands that shows up in my Citrus Lane boxes a lot. We’re always happy to see a book in the box, as we are a family of readers, and Baby Girl loves books. This book isn’t particularly awesome, but it’s nice and sturdy, and has some examples of opposites that don’t show up in any of her other opposite books, so that’s nice. Definitely a plus in this box.

2. 5″ Playground Ball from Crocodile Creek
Price: $7.99
Status: Awesome
Comments: This was one of those items that happens every once in awhile that was just timed perfectly. Baby Girl is obsessed with balls, and this is actually a very nice one. It’s colorful, fun, and very sturdy (I’m not afraid that my cats will pop it. This is a great addition to our play area! I should note that Citrus Lane also included some paper bowling pins to be colored and used with this ball. While I like the idea of including activities and suggestions for using the items in the box, she’s still a bit young for coloring or for understanding a game like bowling.

3. Mighty Bug Shield Repellant Lotion from Episencial
Price: $1.77
Status: Could be great…
Comments: Okay, so this is annoying. I’ve received Episencial products in my Citrus Lane boxes before and loved them. I’ve also bought some of my own accord. This is the second time I’ve been sent a tiny sample size of something from them. This could have been a stellar review, as we’ve been hating trying to use standard bug repellant on Baby Girl, and receiving this product would have been timely and well appreciated. Instead, they sent us a 0.5 ounce sample that will barely cover one use. Very annoying. I would have been ecstatic to receive this in full size (same with the other sample size products from Episencial I’ve received previously). I feel like I can barely even count this as an item. The price I’ve listed is based on a percentage of the price for the full size item.

4. Adhesive Bandages from Ouchies Jr.
Price: $5.00
Status: Meh
Comments: These are just vanity band-aids. I’ve never really understood decorative band-aids, not even when I was a kid, but these are fine, and I’m sure we’ll use them eventually, even if it’s just on ourselves rather than on Baby Girl. I certainly would never pay $5 for vanity band-aids.

5. Hand Sanitizing Wipes from CleanWell
Price: $5.50
Status: Useful
Comments: These are an interesting concept, but I’m not sure how useful they are to us. We use liquid hand sanitizer all the time, but this big canister isn’t exactly easy to take places, and we aren’t clean freak people that are constantly sanitizing our hands. I put them on the changing table for those times when I’m not fast enough to keep Baby Girl from grabbing a handful of poop while I’m changing her. That’s the best use I could think of.

6. Free Trial Offer from FabKids
Price: $39.95
Status: Absolutely Not
Comments: I’m pretty annoyed that after the hullabaloo a few months ago when Citrus Lane included a JustFab offer (the same company as FabKids) that this was included. The reasons I’m annoyed that this was included are many, but a here are a few. 1) The value is inflated. There is no way I would pay $40 for an outfit just to have a brand name on it, plus you can get the same or similar clothes at an actual store for less. 2) This service operates like a scam. When you claim your “free outfit”, you have to pay shipping, and they automatically sign you up to have your credit card charged every month whether you like it or not, and if you don’t pay close attention, you could actually be charged every month and receive nothing, as you have to log into your account and choose an outfit before they send you anything. Then, when you try to cancel, they will give you a hard time and often, while they will stop charging your credit card, will not actually delete your account so that you have the opportunity to restart the service. No thanks. 3) While many of the products and companies that Citrus Lane sends are organic, good-hearted companies started by real moms and dads, the brands carried by FabKids manufacture the majority of their products in Bangladesh, where they have all those awesome factory fires killing hundreds of the workers that make these very clothes. Not exactly a company with a conscience. 4) Sizing starts at 2T. Why in the WORLD, are you sending me a free outfit (whether it is free or not) that is 2-3 sizes too big for my baby? Not cool. Also, this free outfit thing is only for people who are not already members of FabKids, so if you already signed up, you get nothing and this offer is worthless.

Final Thoughts:
This month’s box was only okay, but I feel like it was probably an awesome one for somebody else. I can see the value in it, it just wasn’t a home run for me. Also, this is the first box I’ve had that cut so close to full price value. I feel like the FabKids offer was thrown in just to bump up value, and I’m a bit disappointed. I’m actually planning to try Bluum next month as well just to see how it compares.

Optional Add-to-Box:
I also received an offer this month to add a Bumkins Zippered Wet/Dry Bag to my box at the price of $14.95. I didn’t take advantage of the offer because I prefer PlanetWise wet bags and already own several, and because the price wasn’t a special offer at all, as this is the same price listed on the Bumkins website. If it had been a discount, I could understand a bit better. That said, Bumkins makes great products and I would have been thrilled to receive this in my Citrus Lane box without the extra charge rather than some of the things we received.

By the Numbers:
Total value of the box items: $26.65
Total value of items I will use: $26.65
Is the value greater than the cost? YES

Citrus Lane Review: June 2013

It’s that time of the month again! Time to review another Citrus Lane box and see if it was worth it’s purchase price!

This month my daughter received an eleven month old box with a neutral gender selection.

1. Sun Protection Hat from iPlay
Price: $12.00
Status: Useful
Comments: This is one of those times when I’m really glad I designated gender neutral. I received a solid white hat, but there are many colors and patterns offered, and I’m sure had I chosen one gender or the other we would have ended up with one of those. We already had a sun hat, but this one is sized larger with a larger brim, so there’s a good chance we’ll be able to use it next summer when the one I purchased back in May has been retired. It’s also always a good idea to have spares of certain things. As far as the company as a whole, we own a few iPlay brand items, and we are pretty happy with them overall. I wish they were a little sturdier (one of the swim diapers I purchased started to lose it’s elastic casing after only one wash), but they’ve been useful and comfy for baby, so I can’t complain.

2. Water Toy Set from Haba
Price: $6.00 (approximate)
Status: Nothing Special
Comments: It’s times like this that the way Citrus Lane does things can sometimes be a bummer. While the water toys we got were great, both of them are part of a larger set that would have been more fun, and more valuable, to receive as a whole. We received a boat from the Joining Boats set, which is cool, but a little sad when it has no boats to join to, and a squirter octopus from the Water Fun Set, and with the popularity of squirters right now, we have seven of them already in the bathtub, and six of them in just her normal toys that we were talking about putting in her wading pool. The octopus is certainly a cute squirter, it could have been worse, but I don’t feel like it’s anything to be excited about. The reason the price I’ve listed is approximate is because the items I received aren’t available individually, so I guessed at the value based on the price of the full sets. Mild disappointment aside, the toys are of a high quality and will make good wading pool/bath toys.

3. Stage 2 Homestyle Meal from Happy Family
Price: $1.79
Status: Not Useful
Comments: I have to say that I wasn’t thrilled with the size of three out of four of the items in this month’s box. This is another one. I really hate it when they send us a single food pouch. They aren’t worth much value wise, and I make a lot of Baby Girl’s food, so I just keep them in case of emergencies. This one I will be giving away though, as it is made with chicken broth. I’m a vegetarian, and while I’m not going to force that choice on my daughter, I’m also not going to give her meat until she is old enough to ask for it. It’s a personal choice, which coincidentally makes this food pouch useless to me. Maybe my nephew will like it. But what if it wasn’t chicken and she loved it? She would eat that entire thing in one sitting and then it would be gone. I hate that.

4. Sunny Sunscreen SPF35 from Episencial
Price: $8.34 (approximate)
Status: Nothing Special
Comments: I am actually disappointed in this item for a couple of reasons. One is just a little silly, and that is that I was hoping to get some baby sunscreen in last month’s box before it got hot outside. As a consequence, I had already purchased some sunscreen. The other major reason is because I would have been over the moon that this was in the box if it had been a full 2.7 oz. tube. It is not. It is a 2.7 oz. tube filled with only 1.5 oz. and marked as a “Citrus Lane Exclusive”. Annoying. 1.5 oz. of sunscreen certainly doesn’t get you very far. It feels like they’re just trying to bait you into buying more, which annoys me since this box is supposed to be worth $25 or more, and I’ve already purchased Episencial products as a result of trying the ones sent to me by Citrus Lane. This item makes me feel a little gipped to tell the truth. I love Episencial products. I wish they had sent me a full tube.

Final Thoughts:
This may be the most disappointing box I’ve received so far. Usually I receive one item I’m crazy about (or more), one or two nothing specials, and one I’m not a fan of, but the quantity of product in this box left me a little sad. Half a tube of sunscreen? Lonely toys from sets that have been picked a part? A single food pouch? Not exactly impressive.

I should also mention that Citrus Lane did give me the option to purchase additional Episencial products at an additional cost to be added to my box this month at a discount. They do this occasionally. I didn’t take them up on it this month because I didn’t need any of the products they were offering, having already purchased them a couple of months ago from Episencial.

By the Numbers:
Total value of the box items: $28.13
Total value of items I will use: $26.34
Is the value greater than the cost? YES

Just a hint to Citrus Lane, as a loyal customer I think you should know that “value” is not just a game of numbers, but one of perception. While I looked up the dollar value of the items in my box, not everyone will do that, and the perceived value of this box was much lower than the ones we have received in the past. You may be better off splurging on a full tube of sunscreen (or at least putting the 1.5 oz. exclusive in a 1.5 oz. tube rather than a half full 2.7 oz tube with a sticker over the volume…) in terms of building brand loyalty. Just a suggestion.

Citrus Lane Review: January 2013 Box

Last month I reviewed my first gift box from Citrus Lane with stellar results. I also promised that I would review my next box so that a fair evaluation could be made as to whether their subscription service is worth the price. As a reminder, I got my subscription on sale and only paid $16.50 per box. As part of my evaluation I will assess whether the subscription is worth this price, the standard 6 month price of $21 per box, or the 3 month price of $25 per box. Last month it would have been worth it at any of these, let’s see what this month has to offer!

January 2013 Box

Once again, the box was fun to get in the mail. I love getting packages, and having the element of surprise that comes with not knowing what’s inside only made it better. I imagine it would be even more fun if Baby Girl had been old enough to help me open it.

What was in the box:

Item 1: Night and Day Discovery Toy by Skip Hop
Retail Price: $14.00
Bought it Anyway?  Yes
Notes: I adore Skip Hop brand items. We have two of their awesome diaper bags, and I am in love with several of their other items, including many of their toys. I’m pretty picky about baby toys, I think a lot of the “tried and true” brands make a lot of noise, look tacky, and aren’t actually very interesting for babies. Baby Girl likes toys that do things and have several different textures. This toy fits the bill. Funny story though, she had actually already received this toy in her Christmas stocking at her Great-Grandma’s house this year! I still got my money’s worth out of this item though, as I called a couple of department stores (I won’t say who, since it’s definitely cheating the system a bit) and found one that takes returns for store credit without a receipt and also regularly stocks this toy, and was able to get a full $14.00 in store credit that we used to purchase a Winkel, which we had been meaning to purchase for a few months (Best teething toy around, hands down). Awesome. If you’re looking to purchase the awesome Skip Hop toy though, use coupon code Citruslane25 for 25% off any purchase of $30 or more from the Skip Hop store through 2/15/13.

Item 2: Soothing Creme by Episencial
Retail Price: $11.00
Bought it Anyway? Maybe
Notes: I’m actually rather glad to find this stuff in the box. To be honest, we’re still working our way through the bottles and bottles of lotion that we got as gifts before and after Baby Girl was born, but it isn’t the nicest stuff, and now that it’s winter her skin is starting to show signs of irritation. She’s had some symptoms of baby eczema and dermatitis in the past, so I feel like if she has some flare ups, this is the stuff to use rather than the J&J we have hanging out in the closet. This stuff is especially great if you’re against any type of additives in your baby products, as it is missing any enzymes or fragrances that might cause a reaction in your baby’s skin. They also included a sample size packet of their “Playful Wash” baby wash and shampoo in one, which I’m sure we’ll use. After browsing through the Episencial website, I’m sort of eying their “Cheeky Salve” for treating and preventing chapped cheeks and lips in babies, as I think Baby Girl is starting to get some chapped cheeks, especially after we take the dog for a walk in the winter air. Good thing Citrus Lane included a coupon! If you’re eying anything on the Episencial site like I am, here’s a coupon for you! Use code EPICITRUS to receive $5 off all orders through 3/1/2013.

Item 3: Baby Laundry Detergent by Dropps
Retail Price: $1.00
Bought it Anyway? No
Notes: I’m kind of disappointed by this item. While I would probably use it anyway, since it’s an enzyme free detergent for sensitive skin, one of my two included pouches burst in shipping, and now the second pouch is all covered in ooey-gooey detergent. I’m tempted to just throw it out rather than try to fish out a single pouch. Blech. On top of that, I’m not really looking for a new baby detergent, since I already have a great all natural detergent that is also cloth diaper safe (a must in this cloth diaper household!). Not only that, but I have 3 1/2 huge boxes of it still, as it is most cost effective to buy it in the case. When I buy it in a case I get it for only 25 cents a load, which is half the price of the Dropps stuff. That said, I’m sure this is a great baby specific detergent if you are in need of that, so I won’t talk you out of it, it’s just not for me. If you are interested though, use code CITRUSLANE for 20% off any order through 6/1/2013 in the Dropps store.

Item 4:First Tastes Pouch by Ella’s Kitchen
Retail Price: $1.19
Bought it Anyway? No
Notes: I’m never really excited when I get baby food, I have to say. I love to cook, and I am really excited to save money by making Baby Girl homemade baby food. It’s so simple and easy, and most of it you can make for yourself as well (steam some vegetables for dinner, throw a few into the blender while you’re at it…tada!). That said, I’m glad that I’ve received a few jars and pouches of baby food as gifts, as I’ll be starting to feed Baby Girl solids soon, and since I have no idea how the first few weeks will go, I don’t want to waste time and fresh food on some ill fated food encounters. Better to start off with a tablespoon of organic baby food from the pantry and see how it goes. Might as well. So while I have absolutely no plans to ever purchase manufactured baby food, this ends up as a no. We got the mangoes, which is nice, as it just seems like something fun. That’s just me being silly…but I’m allowed to be. If you’d like to purchase some food pouches, use code CITRUSEK2013 for $5 off a purchase of $25 through 12/31/2013.

Item 5: Farmyard Rhymes from Barefoot Books
Retail Price: $6.99
Bought it Anyway? Maybe
Notes: We are a book family. I almost never get rid of books, and I like to own books. I like to love my books well, and I hate the self-conscious feeling that comes from reading someone else’s book and having to be its caretaker. As a kid, my parents were never stingy with the books, and my brother and I were huge fans of reading from an early age. I would love it if Baby Girl were the same way, and so would Hubby. As a result, she owns a lot of books. We made it clear to everyone we know that books were always a good gift, put books on Baby Girl’s amazon wishlist, and bought her a membership in a Dr. Seuss book club (they’re books we would want her to have anyway, and 3 for the price of 2 is always a good deal). This only gets a maybe because while I love the hand-stitched illustration style and whimsical nature of this board book, I’m a sucker for nursery rhymes and hate it when they appear incomplete in book after book. Because of this I probably wouldn’t have bought it myself, but it’s fun now that we have it, and I know it will be well loved, as none of our nursery rhyme books so far are quite as fun and baby friendly. Baby Girl likes to turn pages, so I’ve been relegated to reading mostly board books recently, and I’m sure we’ll be reading this one frequently.
As a bonus, Barefoot Books is a great little company to support. They are an independent press (which is almost always a good thing), and they support many charitable organizations that share their goals of global understanding, empowering children through art and story, and protecting and preserving the earth for future generations. They also have an “Ambassador Program” that allows stay at home moms to promote a great company and children’s literacy, while fundraising for causes they care about and making a little money on the side. All great stuff, in my humble opinion. Plus, they carry puppets in their online shop, and that’s always a selling point in my book.
If you’re looking for a great book for your child, use code CITRUSJAN13 at checkout for 25% off through 3/1/2013.

In Summary: Is It Worth It?
Items I would definitely have bought before the box: $14.00
Items I love now that I have them: $17.99
Total value of stuff I’m glad I got: $31.99
Answer: YES

Based on the parameters, yes, it was worth the subscription price for me. I paid $16.50, but even at $21.00 or $25.00, I still got more value out of my box of items this month than I put into it. This is starting to look like a pretty good deal here in month two, but who knows, one of these months might be a total bomb. As of right now, I can definitely recommend a subscription to Citrus Lane.
